When most people think of a travel assignment in California, they might consider San Diego, Los Angeles, or San Francisco. Although they can be great locations to land a travel job, they are not the only game in town. Why not choose a location in California that is a little less glamorous than the big cities, but still has plenty of offer? If you’re considering a travel nursing assignment out west, you might want to give Sacramento a try.

Sacramento Basics

If you’re up on your geography, you know Sacramento is the capital of California. But what else do you know about this old gold rush town?

Location: Sacramento is located in northern California about 90 miles east of San Francisco.  It’s also about 100 miles from Lake Tahoe. Its central location means you can be at the coast or in the mountains in less than two hours.

Population:  The population of Sacramento is just under 500,000, which makes it the sixth largest city in California. Smaller suburbs outside of Sacramento give this medium size city a small-town feel.

Weather: If you’re used to the east or Midwest, taking a travel assignment in Sacramento in the winter will be a breeze. Sacramento is relatively warm all year long. Summers can get hot, and winters tend to stay mild. The hottest month of the year is July with an average temperature of 92 degrees. The coldest month is January with an average temperature of about 54 degrees.

Travel Nursing Opportunities

There are large medical centers in Sacramento including Shiners Children’s Hospital and the University of California Davis Medical Center. UC Davis is a nationally renowned teaching hospital and level one trauma center. It serves 33 counties in the Sacramento area.

In addition to UC Davis, Sacramento is also home to the Sutter Health System, which operates several hospitals in the area as well as Dignity Health Care System.

If you prefer a smaller facility, there are several nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities, and small community hospitals in the Sacramento area.

Recreational Activities

Sacramento offers all types of activities to keep you busy on your days off. If you are an outdoor enthusiast, you’re in luck. The Sacramento River and the American River have opportunities for rafting, boating, and fishing. For recreation on land, take a ride on the American River Bike Trail, which is 32 miles and runs from Folsom Lake to Old Sacramento. There are also several golf courses, water parks, and festivals.

The city also has cultural opportunities including several theaters, museums, and the Sacramento Ballet. Sacramento is home to the Kings, which is a professional basketball team. If you want to take a day trip, Sacramento is a great location. Yosemite, Napa Valley, and Santa Cruz are all about three hours or less from Sacramento.
