fall travel nursingIt’s getting to be that time of year when the weather turns cooler, football season is in full swing, and colorful fall foliage dots the landscape. If you’re working as a travel nurse, autumn is a great time to set out on a new assignment. With all the great locations to choose from, it can be hard to decide where to go. We have a few ideas listed below to give you a start!

Massachusetts makes a great travel nursing destination any time of the year, but it’s extra special in the fall. Cities throughout the state celebrate the fall months with festivals, ghost tours, and other haunted happenings. Cities in Massachusetts, such as Boston, have several top notch healthcare facilities where you could  land a travel assignment. A short drive from Boston, you’ll find the quaint town of Salem, where you can explore the witch museums and everything Halloween.

When you think of fall foliage, Vermont often comes to mind. Throughout the state, there are spectacular driving routes to enjoy the colorful season. Vermont is also home to several world class ski resorts. If you time your assignment just right, you may get to enjoy colder weather and hit the slopes.

When you think of fall travel assignments, Arizona may not be the first state that comes to mind; but during the autumn months, when the weather cools down, it is the perfect time to explore all that Arizona has to offer. From Phoenix to Tucson to Sedona, there are several top medical centers that could use the help of travel nurses. Arizona also offers plenty of outdoor activities and famous sites, such as the Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest.

As the temperatures drop and the humidity decreases, Virginia makes a great travel nursing destination for several seasons. In addition to all kinds of fall activities, such as pumpkin patches, hayrides, and harvest festivals, Virginia is also home to spectacular fall foliage and parks, including Shenandoah National Park. Plus, Virginia is only a short drive or train ride from other great locations, such as Washington D.C. and New York City, so that you can take road trips on your days off.

New York

New York is an exciting travel nursing spot year-round. But the fall is the perfect time to accept an assignment. The heat and humidity of the summer have passed by, and you don’t yet have to worry about winter snowstorms slowing you down. New York City has dozens of major hospitals that could utilize nurse travelers. There are also other locations around the state that may be worth a look, such as Rochester, Albany, and Buffalo. If you’re lucky, you can find an assignment with apple orchards nearby, so you can go apple picking and enjoy fresh apple cider donuts.

If you have always wanted to visit Alaska, the fall may be a perfect time. Depending on where you go, the weather may still be relatively mild, and there are tons of outdoor activities, such as hiking, fishing and whale watching. Alaska also has remote locations off the beaten path to explore. But if you’re more of a city person, consider assignments in cities, such as Anchorage or Fairbanks.
